SMART Class Series is a publishing company that knows what every English Second Language teacher knows: student motivation is critical to student success. It's so important that our company name is an acrynom of motivational drivers: Skill, Measure, Action, Result and Time.
By clarifying to students what skill they will master, what measures will be used to determine acquisition, what actions will be undertaken, what results they will achieve and how much time this will all take, students begin to understand that there is a design at work. And in time, they come to trust the design.
How do we apply this SMART design into a class? Click here to see a page from one of the textbooks which shows how each motivational driver is implemented.

The authors of our first series, SMART Communication, are Robert Stroud and Steve Harris. See their comments below on what drove them to help us with this series.
"All in all, teaching really is about motivating students. I've known that for years and I've always wanted to create materials which get to the heart of what students really need - to not only improve but to enjoy what they're doing. Being a part of creating these textbooks with SMART Class Series helped me to distill 10 years of motivation research into real-life, living, breathing classroom environments."
Robert Stroud
"I guess you could say I was inspired by uninspired university students. I took their detached attitudes personally. My colleague Robert and I designed a rebuttal - SMART Communication. I threw everything that I possessed into this series - my graduate research, 19 years of classroom experience and a passion to engage students. I use this series with several of my university classes and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do."
